Alexandria Real Estate Equities is a Pasadena, California-based, publicly traded urban office REIT (NYSE: ARE) and the pioneer of the life science real estate niche. Founded in 1994 by Joel Marcus, the company develops and operates collaborative life science and technology campuses, known as Megacampus ecosystems, concentrated in innovation clusters such as Greater Boston, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, Seattle, Maryland, Research Triangle Park and New York City. Alexandria also runs a venture capital arm that makes strategic equity investments in life science and technology tenants.
