Founded in 1970 as Health Care REIT, the company partners with leading operators and health systems, such as Sunrise Senior Living and Benchmark, to finance real estate supporting innovative care delivery models. Shankh Mitra has served as chief executive officer since October 2020 and remains chief investment officer, a role he has held since 2018. In 2025 the company completed major acquisitions including Barchester Healthcare for approximately 6.9 billion dollars and Amica Senior Lifestyles for approximately 4.6 billion dollars, expanding its senior housing footprint.
